Song Dynasty (960-1279) A period of great technological advancement and the development of China's first
permanent standing navy. In 1123, Envoy Lu Yundi dispatched by the Song Court was rescued by the Goddess Mazu
who appeared to him during a violent storm that devasted his fleet. Upon his return, the Emperor Huizong grateful for her intervention built a temple in her honor, thus beginning the belief of Mazuism. For several hundred years all central government and fourteen emperors paid honor to the goddess giving her more than thirty prestigious titles which include Heavenly Empress, Sacred Mother of Heaven and most commonly known Goddess of the Sea. Mazu was known to roam the seas protecting her believers through miraculous interventions.
